Dear Mindful Warriors,
Thank you so much for attending Session 2 of the Afro Dance Fusion!! It is very pleasant to see that a core of Regulars is shaping!! It is so positive to observe that you are already getting confident with the Mindful Afro Warrior moves!!
Thank you for the feedbacks, it is so lovely to hear and read that you are enjoying the music from Gambia, Mali, Guinea and Brazil!!
It is so encouraging that you share that the visualisation of the setting of the main routine has helped you to experience the journey of a community in danger and to embody the steps of the main routine that I choreographed on one of the songs of the film, 'The Woman King'.
On my birthday, friends, family and I went to watch 'The Woman King' at the Ritzy in Brixton. It was nothing like I expected, the storyline was captivating, extraordinary and 'rhythmic'! The acting was exceptional, what I loved most is knowing Samurider, from Brixton and Ghana, trained all the cast to Martial Arts for screen! I am a big fan of her work (and her abs! and her hair! and her motorbike! and her Martial Arts moves!!!) ;-)
I wish there would have been more Traditional African Dance; indeed, there was a lot of freestyle in regards to dancing, you can clearly notice that the focus was clearly on fighting and the art of African Martial Arts. Actually, the most famous move they perform in the film is actually a Gospel movement i.e. African American, which is fine; however, as a Movement Practitioner in Afro Dance Fusion, I felt to honour my West African Ancestors and choreograph on 'Keep Rising' because it is such a positive message, also, one of my favourite West African singers sings in it, which is absolutely mind- blowing!! Indeed, follow Angelique Kidjo, she is that good, that she is famous in France, she is always either on French television and in festivals, she is very active and an incredible musician and dancer!
What a honour to be dancing on this piece with you!
I so look forward to dancing with you on Friday at 4:30pm!!
Have a peaceful week, my Mindful Warriors!
Mindfully yours,
Awa
